Bethesda S&H Handball

A group of about 5-7 regular players play on Tuesday and Friday at 12 noon.  Two courts are used with players of different levels so there is usually a fast court and one a bit easier. The players would be glad to have others join in so please come along and join the fun.

Why Handball

1.    Handball is a “Lifetime” sport.  Long after careers in team sports have come to an end lifetime sports, such as handball, are played and enjoyed.  Handball is enjoyed today by many people in their golden years.

2.    Handball is a sport for the masses.  Courts are plentiful.  Several city and school facilities are available at no cost.  Most health clubs today include courts as do YMCAs.  The game can be played on 1 wall, 3 wall or 4 wall courts.

3.    Handball is inexpensive.  No need for expensive equipment or lessons.  The minimum requirement is a ball, a wall and an opponent.

4.    Handball is available to everyone.  Size makes no difference.  All students can experience success!  People of all ages, shapes, sexes and sizes can compete together.

5.    Handball builds character.  The nature of the game and the ethics of the game require that each person to be their own judge and jury.

6.    Handball is an investment in the self.  While the game is simple in principle, as people are able to participate in their first day, it takes 30 days to be competitive and years to master.

7.    Handball develops fitness.  It develops and requires cardiovascular and muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, balance and speed.

8.    Handball is bilateral.  The skills needed include using both sides of the body involving both upper and lower body parts.

9.    Handball involves full use of the mind.  Players must stay focused, develop strategic thinking and learn how to anticipate.

10 Handball develops players physiologically, sociologically and psychologically.  In addition to developing the physical skills necessary to play the game players develop skills related to other people and as well as an greater understanding of themselves.

11.  Handball is contagious.  Once the game is learned you can’t stop the kids from playing.  Before school, during recess, lunch, after school and on weekends.

12.  Handball can be played recreationally or competitively.  Courts are plentiful on the recreational level, and the USHA and local organizations offer a variety of avenues for competition.

  1. Handball offers a supportive community.  Players are always interested in passing the game on to others.  The USHA provides free teaching guides and start up equipment.
