S&H Varsity Winners for 2010

It was an outstanding finish to a great season The Div 2 champions were decided by the 7th and last match. Landon 2 and Whitman 2 were 3 matches each when Mike Hunter and Neal Malkani stepped on court. The atmosphere was very exciting (and loud!). They went to 2 - 2 and then paced through each point of the last game with an amazing amount of cheering from the participants. Mike finally prevailed winning 14-12 giving Landon 2 a terrific win for the season. Congratulations to Alex Duplessie (who was among the loudest of the cheerers) Clive Chang and Dr Goodwin.

In the Div 1 Finals; BCC 1 quickly won the first 2 matches, however Whitman prevailed winning the Championship for the 2nd time in a row. Congratulations to the Whitman team and their captain Jacq Barnes. After the matches the awards ceremony was held. The 2010 SIVL Award winners are -

MVP Alex Gangitano (Stoneridge)

MIP Joey Borden (BCC)

Both will receive an engraved glass plaque and $100 gift certificate.

Trinity Dynasty Beats Washington All-Stars in Largest Squash Match in DC History

Report by James Zug

Trinity College’s eleven-time national championship men’s squash team took on an all-star “Best of DC” squad on Monday 4 January 2010 at Bethesda Sport & Health.  Trinity won 11-2 in three hours of outstanding squash in front of nearly three hundred spectators.

A superlative evening hosted by Brad Scott, the general manager of Bethesda Sport & Health and Jonathan Adler, S&H’s chief executive officer, the event had many organizers: Page Lansdale, a Bantam squash alum, was the point person, helped greatly by Jim Martin, Connie Barnes, Rod Barnes and the Trinity Club of Washington. The refereeing for the top three matches was performed by the Tommy Bahama-shirt team of Hunt Richardson, Malcolm Jensen and Meherji Madan. There were tables groaning from the platefuls of shrimp and sandwiches and much kibitzing amongst the many friends, players, supporters and board members in the National Capital Squash community.

It was the largest crowd ever to watch a squash match in Washington. The only comparable events were the 1984 and 1986 softball nationals, both of which had more people at the Saturday evening dinner. In 1984 the party was in the restaurant above the Washington Squash & Nautilus Club, with a band and spirited dancing going well past midnight; in 1986, with more than three hundred participants and the International Squash Rackets Federation’s annual convention in town, the Saturday night party, held outdoors (in September) at the Textile Museum in Kalorama was an enormously successful bash.

This year’s event started with a large number of juniors in an hour-long clinic with the Trinity players. “It was awesome,” said Nick Mendez, a senior at Sidwell Friends, “I just wanted to it to last longer.”

For Trinity, this was the first stop on their whistle-stop four-city, post-New Years East Coast exhibition tour, and in some matches it took them a while to shake off the rust from their long drive down that day from Hartford. The only wins for Washington came at the top and bottom of the ladder. At the top was Ryan Cuskelly, the twenty-two year-old Australian pro who is based in New York near his coach Rod Martin and ranked fifty-four in the world. Brought down by a group of NCS supporters to boost the top of the lineup, he outslugged senior Baset Chaudhry, the Bantam’s #1 in a 3-0 whitetwash. Chaudhry is the two-time defending national intercollegiate champion who turned twenty-four eight days after the match. And he was ranked as high as sixty-one on the PSA tour before entering Trinity, so much was anticipated in his tilt against Cuskelly. But Cuskelly dominated from the get-go. At the bottom, Rod Barnes jumped in when Trinity showed up with thirteen players and he outlasted Greg Crane 3-1.

In between, Washington fought hard but could not pull off another win. Patrick Chifunda, the Zambian-born, Richmond-based pro currently ranked one hundred and ten in the world, lost 3-1 to junior Parth Sharma. Dan Petrie, probably the best player at the moment permanently based in Washington, performed brilliantly against sophomore Vikram Malhotra, almost taking the first game but eventually falling in some riveting squash 3-0. Jake Gross took a game off freshman Johan Detter and two of the matches went the full five-game distance: Matt Danker almost nipped freshman Juan Flores and Alex Gross nearly got past sophomore Daniel Echevarria.

Psychologically, the most fascinating match was between Hesh El Halaby and Bantam senior Supreet Singh. They met twice last February when as #6 on the ladder Princeton played Trinity: in a dual-match in mid-February (Hesh won in three) and eight days later in the finals of the national intercollegiate team championships (Hesh won in five). Both matches, played to nine points, were incredibly interesting, especially because Trinity staved off defeat overall both times in 5-4 victories. For Hesh, playing against Supreet brought back the memories of the horrific loss in the nationals: in one match, a Tiger was up 2-0, 7-2 and serving; in another a Tiger was up 2-0, 4-1; and in a third a Tiger was up 5-0 in the fifth—and yet the Bantams won all three matches. For Supreet, it was a reminder that he had lost to Hesh at a critical time. Hesh, working at a law firm in Washington, had not been playing much squash, while Supreet had been training hard. Hesh won the first game and then his lack of fitness was telling and Supreet rode out to a close-fought four-game win.

“We had a fabulous time,” said Trinity coach Paul Assaiante. “It was a thrill to play in front of such a large crowd at such a beautiful club and to see so many friends. We had a lot of good matches—Washington would be a top-five squash team if it was a college, for sure.”

The Bantams played Baltimore the next day, winning 9-3 at the Merritt Athletic Club at Bare Hills. The following day they vanquished a very strong Philadelphia squad 12-3 at Episcopal Academy. Then they played two friendlies in New York, at the New York Athletic Club and the Printing House, before returning to Hartford.

Having not lost since February 1998, Trinity has now won two hundred and six consecutive dual-matches, a record for collegiate sports in America. (The next closest are: one hundred and thirty-seven wins for Miami men’s tennis in 1957-64; Penn State women’s volleyball’s current streak of one hundred and four matches North Carolina women’s soccer’s ninety-two games in 1990-94 and the most well-known NCAA streak, the UCLA men’s basketball’s eighty-eight games in 1971-74.)

The Bantams have won eleven consecutive national titles and are heavily favored to win a twelfth next month. Their dynasty is the subject of a new book written by James Zug that Penguin is publishing in the fall of 2010. Their appearance in Washington was a milestone evening in the history of squash in this city.

Trinity Champions Tour comes to Bethesda S&H

The Trinity college squash team is making a "Champions Tour" in early January playing friendly matches in Washington DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York City.

Trinity has won 202 consecutive dual matches in a row and has collected 11 straight national titles since 1999. They hope for a 12th national title in 2010. This accomplishment is the nation’s longest winning streak in the history of the NCAA of any sport, at any level or Division, for either men or women.

Come see the Trinity College Men’s Varsity Squash Team play a friendly match against the best players of Washington DC on January 4, 2010 at 6:00pm at Bethesda Sport & Health.

 New staff

Welcome to Teddy Weiss new assistant squash pro -

Teddy Weiss is a 2009 Vassar College graduate. While in attendance, she was the Women's Varsity Squash Two Year Captain, and competed all four years. In 2008, as Captain, she inspired her team to become division champions by clinching the Walker Cup at Nationals. Having co-founded the National Capital Girls Squash Club in high school, which included girls in the DC-MD-VA area she is delighted to be back. Teddy will serve as an Assistant Squash Coach for Sport and Health. She hopes to help players both new to the game and veterans realize the joys and benefits of tearing up the court!

Equipment

We have Black Knight, Harrow and some Head stock available as well as ASICS shoes - these will be available for demos during the S&H open, and Wintersun. Jay is doing restringing at Bethesda and Worldgate.

Policy

We have received several complaints lately about players continuing to play on the court when their time has finished and the next player is waiting. Please show consideration for the person who has booked the court. The idea of 'we'll just finish the game' does not apply if it means you will be on the court for 10 or more minutes. If it is a few minutes before the end of the hour consider not starting a new game, agreeing to play to say 5 points or agreing to leave the court when the next person arrives. Thank-you for your cooperation.

S&H Summer Camps

Summer Camp Success! Sport & Health coaches score

9.7 out of 10 on their coaching performances

Sport & Health broke the 100 participant mark

for their 2009 summer camps

Director of Squash, Connie Barnes says, "In May, it seemed the downturn in the economy was taking its toll and that our numbers might be lower than usual, however with 40 children that registered for our Junior Summer Camps in the last 2 weeks of August, our record of 123 children attending camps was achieved."

At Sport & Health, three types of camps are offered. First, is the very popular "Little Juniors" camp for 6 - 12 yr olds. This camp includes squash and board games, watching movies, swimming and more and the kids have a great time while being active and entertained. The second camp is predominately for High school and Middle school participants and ranges from beginners to elite players. Squash training, games, matches, technique and strategy, strength and conditioning are focused on during this camp. The camp has included students from Episcopal, Potomac, BCC, Whitman, WIS, Woodberry Forest, Pyle, Wilson, Westland and several other local schools as well as participants from as far as New York. The third camp is for advanced participants only and was well subscribed to this year. Participants are generally the top of their school teams really looking for significant improvement over a 1 or 2 week period. Students have been excited about their level of improvement as most will be playing for their school teams in Fall and Winter as well as participating in National Tournaments.

Barnes says, "To break the 100 participant mark has been a huge achievement for Sport & Health. Besides developing the largest and most comprehensive squash program in the tri-state area with 5 clubs and over 1,000 members, our major interest has been on Junior development. When we arrived in 2002 we had around 20 kids, we now have over 250 who play at Sport & Health clubs. To bring the joy of squash to hundreds of youngsters and help develop the next generation of players has been a terrific privilege."

Thank-you to our fantastic coaches Rod Barnes, Jay Naseem, Doug Baumgarten and Bryan Keating for their tremendous effort. Parents were asked to complete surveys regarding camp expectations and whether these were met. Sport & Health coaches scored 9.7/ 10 on surveys for meeting expectations for all camps

S&H players do well in 2009 Fisher Cup

Sport and Health Members have performed well this year in the National Capital Squash (NCS) city individual championships. The individual championships are named the Fisher Cup after Geoff Fisher, a stalwart of Washington squash in the 1990s who sadly died at a relatively young age. Pictured are Bethesda's Bryan Keating (Finalist Div1, Connie Barnes  (Champion Women's A), Jacqueline Barnes (Champion, Women's B), Geoff Keating (Champion, Div 5) and Regency's David Ayliff (Champion, Div 4).  Absent is Jeff Bede who was finalist in the Div 5. Notable mentions for Bethesda's Carlos Picone 3rd in Div 2 and Matt Dankner 3rd in Div 1.

Nice Season Finish for Bethesda junior Jacqui Barnes

It probably not as surprising having two squash coaches for parents, but it was nevertheless a stirring finish to the 08/09 season for Bethesda's top U15 junior, Jacqui Barnes. After a relatively slow start to the season, with her national ranking slipping slightly, Jacqui had a lovely run over the last few months. It all started when she captained Whitman HS to a win in the Div 1 SIVL cup (see below). She then placed runner up in the U17 flight of the Trifecta 3 junior tournament, losing to a good silver level player in the age bracket above her natural. She followed this with a win in the Women's 3.5 at the Potomac fever (pictured right). Her run then culminated in her best achievement for the season, when over the first weekend in April she won the National U15 Silver Championships in Philadelphia. Coming in to the tournament as 7th seed with a rating significantly down on the top seeds, Jacqui surprised the first and second seeds with relatively easy wins along the way to taking the title in a 29 person draw.  The win took her to 28 in the national rankings.

The 14 yo has been getting used to a lanky frame that is close on 6 feet, many inches of which appeared over the last year.  It is not easy to move around a squash court when you are built like a young giraffe, but this has been greatly helped by strength and fitness training sessions with Sport and Health's Yongmei Ye who studied Jacqueline's movement and developed the necessary training regime to get her up to speed with some of the "little rabbits" running around the nationals.

Post Note:  Jacqui Barnes has continued her winning way. In April 2009 the Gazette newspaper picked up her Silver's National win and posted articles on the front page of the  Sport section (next to a picture of Tiger Woods). The story was advertised on the front page of the advertiser, next to Tiger as well!.  Click here to read.  In May Jacqui cleaned up by winning the NCS Fisher Cup Women C/D grades without losing a set, then on that night was awarded "NCS most improved player"  for 2008/09.  Father Rod was heard to quip that the only thing holding her back now is the big head she has to drag around the court.

Jacqui also made the local HS newspaper http://spec.theblackandwhite.net/print10/Page2.pdf

Whitman HS  Cleans up at SIVL.  Division 1 and 2 winners

Congratulations to the Whitman division 2 squash team, who (with help from some Pyle students) won the SIVL Division 2 (Sport & Health Interclub Varsity League) championships. Victory is even sweeter as this comes after the Whitman division 1 team also won. Other teams in the SIVL include BCC, Landon, Wakefield, Thomas Jefferson, Stone Ridge, Holton Arms and Madeira. Jacqueline Barnes (Div 1 co-captain) was awarded the trophy at a ceremony at Worldgate Sport & Health prior to finals of the National Capital Open on Feb 10 (a $17,000 prize money event held each year).

Congratulations to the Division 1 players who won on finals day vs Thomas Jefferson:

15 of our squash players (including a high percentage of girls) participating in the SIVL have received calls from colleges interested in talking to the players about squash. Squash could the difference to help your child receive a college spot because as Gail Ramsay, Princeton Squash coach claims - there are not enough kids to fill the recruiting spots - see

Spring squash starts on March 11, we hope you can join us

Plenty of Junior Activity Coming Up at Sport and Heatlh

Besides the tremendously successful DC area school program and SIVL Cup, Sport and Health squash programmers have plenty of other great junior activity in the pipeline this 08/09 winter. Clinics cater for all players from beginner to intermediate, and are offered at Regency and Bethesda centers. Two tournaments are approaching, one the first week in January at Bethesda (Trifecta 2) and a third in mid-February at Worldgate (Trifecta 3). November's Trifecta 1 at Bethesda had solid support with nearly 70 slots taken up. As usual the S&H coaching staff encourage a casual and encouraging atmosphere so even the less experienced can enjoy participating in tournament play. With many vowing to return for 2 and 3, hopefully they will be even bigger and better. This year winter break camps are also being offered late in December. A list of links is provided below, but for the full story go exploring our junior pages.

SquashEmpower 4th annual Gala Weekend and Tournament

The sun setting over the Capitol heralded another wonderful night for the 4th annual SquashEmpower Gala. By 6pm the wine tasting was in full swing with wines selected by wine maestro,  Rod Barnes. (The selection of these wines is one job he actually looks forward to each year). We were delighted to see many faces from previous years (regulars including Isabel Lanier, Deb Dean, Lila Bahadori, David Dickieson, Cyndy Esty, Joe Cleary,………….. First time attendees included Howard Day (co-founder of the DC Academy, another Urban Youth program in DC with which SquashEmpower is currently in merger discussion with). Patricia Valente, Mehmood and Nina Nathani…….also attended. The evenings activities included a welcome by Rod Barnes and a run down of the charities activities over the last 12 months by President Scott Spector. Scott was also delighted to receive a donation from Bob McNally, Tudor Foundation, who has become SquashEmpower’s single largest supporter. Bob’s wife, Denise, also assists with SquashEmpower program.

Tiffany, SquashEmpower student then gave a speech about what she liked about the program and how she felt it would help her in the future. Her speech touched the hearts of many, and reminded us of what the night was all about. The silent auction finished at 7.30pm with wonderful items including an Australian bag of goodies, lessons and clinics with top local pros and racquets all enticing heavy bidding. The extraordinary Joel Bernstein (who, with wife, Donna Bernstein won the Volunteer of the Year Awards) cajoled, enthused and amused the audience to donating significant sums for various high end live auction items. Joe D’Amico won a holiday in Southern France which he will be using for an anniversary trip. Isabel Lanier won the beautiful Cyndy Esty purse. On a side note, Cyndy gave her own purse to SquashEmpower student Tiffany as a gift, I’m sure Tiffany will treasure this always. Sandy Masur and Palmer Page donated Summer camps for the kids and gift certificates for SCLA and Sport & Health were received well by the audience.

The evening included for the first time live music and dancing! 'MADatlantic' which includes drummer Bob McNally and base guitarist Joel Bernstein played a variety of songs which the audience rocked to for 90 mins.

Our thanks goes to all those who donated wines, items for auction and attendees who enjoyed the evening and bidded on these items. It was a wonderful, successful evening. Finally our thanks goes to Geppettos catering, Josh Carin and his crew do a wonderful job every year.

Latest :  Check out the Auction list. If you can't make it to the gala send Rod Barnes your bid

The staff and kids at SquashEmpower are currently gearing up for the fall session of squash and tuition.  It is also the time of year when SquashEmpower runs its major annual fundraiser. This year the gala event will be held at the Top of the Hill function center. Your invite to the proceedings can be found here. SquashEmpower is always seeking major backers for its charity and if you can help please check out the Sponsorship page and fill out and send the donation form. Saif Ullah the executive director explains what a difference this can make in his covering letter.

On the same weekend of the gala the Sport and Health Open squash tournament will be held featuring  flights across the standards and to be held at Bethesda and Worldgate.

A hardball tournament is also planned as well as play the pro matches and clinics for adults and  juniors with US College, and now PSA champion, Yasser el Halaby.

Howe Cup 2008

HISTORY - The annual women's five-person team tournament began in 1928 as an inter-city competition between New York, Philadelphia and Boston. It didn't receive the Howe Cup title until 1955 when Virginia Griggs of New York City donated a permanent trophy, the Howe Cup, named in honor of Margaret Howe and her twin daughters Peggy and Betty. Margaret A. Howe was the US Champion in 1929, '32 and '34. Peggy Howe White was the US Champion in 1952 and '53. Betty Howe Constable was the US Champion in 1950, '56-'59 and then went on to become the Women's Squash coach at Princeton University from 1972-1991.

The B Division was started in 1958 and a C Division was added in 1968. In 1993 the Howe Cup tournament converted from hardball to softball. Since the conversion participation in the tournament has grown so much that often regions send several teams in each division. The Howe Cup has been held all over the country and in 2004 in New York City an A Doubles draw was included for the first time. Washington DC is looking for more players!

Upcoming women's squash league events/Howe Cup training, as follows:

Sunday Sept 14: SCLA, 3-6pm
Sunday Sept 21: Results, 3-6pm, including CLINIC with Larissa

Jahangir Naseem joins Sport and Health Sept 2008

Jahangir Naseem has joined the coaching fraternity at Sport and Health. Jahangir is one of the top players in the region and along with his playing prowess, brings enormous enthusiasm for the game.   The growth of squash within Sport and Health, especially at the junior level, has increased demand for more coaching staff but they are extremely hard to find in the US. Often coaching has to be done by part timers (like your editor) so S&H are indeed lucky to find someone of Jahangir's ability to work full time. Jahangir will be based at Regency Sport and Health but will be available at all other S&H centers also.

The train has left the Railstation

US Squash caught everyone by surprise last week with a snap announcement to discontinue their multi-function automation and databasing software package, Railstation. This was done in favor of an unnamed alternative that should be available in about 6 weeks. Provided with less than two days notice of the disconnection, US district squash associations have been thrown in to turmoil with leagues, tournaments and membership sign ups disrupted. NCS league has had to revert to manual entry and retention of data. The move angered NCS board members who, with the encouragement of US squash, had put in a lot of voluntary effort to bring their local league under the wing of Railstation, and who were appreciating the reduced work load due to the further automation the system brought.

Since the announcement, US Squash President Kevin Klipstein has been inundated under a barrage of inquiries and complaints, but has remained reticent to provide specific details on why the change was so abruptly activated. He stated that under the (undivulged) circumstances there was little choice and that the move would be a positive for US squash in the longer run. The statement released by US squash indicated the new package would be owned with the implication perhaps this may provide significant control over development and running costs. A conference call with district presidents was planned for 7/21/08.

Comment by Rod Barnes:

At Aussienick we are certainly no great fans of Railstation and are not particularly sorry to hear that alternatives are being considered by US squash However, we have no way of knowing whether the new software will be an improvement and have little confidence that US squash know the answer to that question either. Given the  haste of the transition it is hard to imagine the new software, when first delivered, will provide the functionality that Railstation was tailored with through many (painful) years of development.  Whatever the technical merits and potential long term benefits of the decision we are, nevertheless, totally stunned by the way the transition has been handled by US squash. One can only imagine the circumstances that they have gotten themselves into, to have to pull the plug on Railstation in such an abrupt manner, six weeks before the scheduled turn on time of the new system.   Let's hope that US squash has the integrity and good sense to come out in the open very soon, and set the record straight on what led to this. A lot of damage has already been done, but all that can happen with their continued silence on this matter is to feed the rumor mill and further rip US squash apart.

Even Tennis Players play Squash!

What do Edberg, Lendl, Murray, Castle, Henman, Santoro, Federer and Nadal all have in common? They all have played squash. Top tennis players recommend more wrist and the adoption of squash techniques for some shots and playing the game to increase speed, agility and strength. Sometimes it seems that there is a whole different ball game out there. And that game is squash. Rafael Nadal has started playing it more this year. Roger Federer has just been getting better and better. The champion, though, may well be Fabrice Santoro, of France, who was knocked out in the first round by Andy Murray, another decent-looking squash player, three days ago. We are talking here about the use of the wrist. Any beginner given the traditional start to tennis will be taught to lock the wrist, to hit groundstrokes as if the hand is an extension of the forearm. Yes, roll the wrist, but not do not break it, do not use it as a hinge. Do not play squash. But in the ever-changing world of technique, the wrist hinge has found its way through the gates of the All England Club. It arrives as a collective product of new technology, better athleticism and sheer desperation to keep the ball in play. But you would never have seen Pete Sampras, the American who won seven Wimbledon titles and an equal number of other grand-slam events, playing it.....http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/tennis/article4221722.ece

John White Clinics/Lessons and Social Evening

Well Whitey has been and gone. He ran us ragged and taught us lots. Whilst we were hurting and learning, he made us laugh.  Forty people enjoyed his company on Friday night on the deck. He will return. Now be on the lookout for a future world #1 called Max White.  We've never witnessed a kid with that much energy, we'll have to nickname him pinball.

John White will be at Bethesda Sport and Health and available for lessons and Clinics from July 10-12, open to all players. John will also be in attendance at a fundraiser for SquashEmpower at the Barnes residence on Friday July 11th. Cocktails, appetizers and a chat with John all inclusive in a $40 fee. Please sign up and make the former world #1 feel welcome in Washington. More details at this link.

National Capital Open 2009: Your Support Required

It is time to start preparing for Washington DC’s premier professional squash event for 2009, the National Capital Open. Through ASTI’s and your generous support in 2008 we were able to grow the National Capital Open from a 10k event in 2007 to a $24k prize money event. This culminated in two rising stars; Dutchman LJ Anjema (currently #17 in the world) and Aussie Cameron Pilley (Currently #18 in the world, pictured below : the 6’5” stringbean about to destroy a ball) compete the final in front of over 100 people in grandstand seating at Worldgate Sport and Health (below left).

We are currently scoping the event for 2009 and looking for expressions of interest for the following:

- 2008 Sponsors interested in continuing their support
- New Cash Sponsorship for the 2009 event
- Assistance with organization, fundraising, refereeing, hosting players, transport, food etc

Please respond if you can help. This event will only ever be as big and prestigious as you, the DC squash community, want it to be. AussieNick and National Capital Squash are facilitators but you ultimately decide. So far your decision has been to grow the tournament. Your response will largely decide what we do in 2009.  In the same year Richmond, Virginia is on track to put up $100,000 prizemoney for their tournament! We won’t get there this year but I hope the  DC community can pull together to get some of the world’s best here in DC in 2009 – surely the US National Capital is worthy of that!

BCC High School Takes SIVL CUP

The 07/08 season of the Sport & Health Interclub Varsity League (SIVL) finished Friday Feb 29 with a presentation which saw Bethesda–Chevy Chase High School victorious. Caroline Sieber (B-CC Captain) was presented with the beautiful SIVL Cup which will be held in the Trophy Case at the school for the year. Connie Barnes, Director of Squash for Sport & Health, was magnanimous in her praise of Ms Sieber who also received a $200  Gift Certificate as the SIVL Most Valuable Player for the 2007-08 season.

Coach Barnes said that the SIVL has already become one of the largest High School squash leagues in the US. This season players from Landon, Whitman, St Albans, Holton Arms, Langley, Stone Ridge, Madeira, St Stephens and St Agnes, and GDS participated in 30 matches over the winter season. The B-CC team with its captain’s excellent promotion and organization skills included 17 players. Coach Barnes said that 3 other local school had already requested inclusion for next years league.

Participation in playing Squash has increased significantly especially at the junior level in the last five years. When Barnes commenced at Bethesda Sport & Health in 2002, there were 10 juniors playing, the number now approaches 200. The interest, Barnes claims, is due to the nature of the game “it is fast, exciting and challenging and also a family and lifelong sport.” Barnes continues, “while the Private schools play squash only in winter where it offers a welcome alternative, the Public schools play squash all year round. Our Summer camps are especially popular. We have two types, one for the younger set the 7 – 12 yr olds which are fun and teach the basics of squash. The other is for the squash participant who wants to improve in technique, form, and general ability and is for the more serious player”.

Squash is not only popular at the High School level, several Middle Schools including Pyle, Holton Arms, Cooper and Westland participate in coaching at Sport and Health Clubs (Bethesda, Washington DC, McLean, Herndon, Gaithersburg). The SIML Sport & Health Middle School League incorporates monthly matches between the schools played at Bethesda Sport & Health.  If your school is interested in participating in squash Barnes can be contacted at cbarnes@sportandhealth.com

S&H Club Championships: Call for players all clubs

Club championships will be run at all sport and health squash clubs over the next month or two. All standards of player will be catered for, with players organized into boxes in a robin format, with final playoffs if necessary. All members are invited to play and should contact Rod at aussienicksquash@gmail.com  Cost is $20 at all clubs (except Bethesda where it will be $10), and the majority of the funds will go to buying perpetual shields at all clubs except Bethesda.  The results of the Bethesda 2007 championships can be found here.

SquashEmpower ABC News auction prize finally cashed in

Andrew Strasfogel and Donna Sharpe finally followed up on their October 2007 SquashEMpower gala silent auction win, by attending a George Stephanopoulos show taping. The prize was provided courtesy of Courtney Cohen of ABC News. Andrew states, "It was great to meet and have our photo taken with a fellow squash enthusiast, who interviews people like Barack Obama in his day job!"

The SquashEmpower auction is held annually at the Australian Embassy, as part of a Gala weekend of celebration and squash, where all benefits go towards the SquashEmpower program. SquashEmpower is dedicated to improving the lives of disadvantaged youth in the DC area using squash as a motivating vehicle. More can be found about this uplifting program at www.squashempower.org.

For a little glimpse at some of the kids in the program they can be seen here, doing a squash warm up dance that they choreographed themselves.

Is Bethesda's Ramon Barquin the only person to play squash in all 7 continents?

Bethesda veteran Ramon Barquin may have a claim to a substantial squash first, that is to be the first player to play squash in Antarctica. Having played squash over the years in all continents except Antarctica, Ramon decided to take his squash racquet on a holiday cruise to Antarctica and hit the ball around a little.

What he did was hit the ball against one of the big tanks at an abandoned whaling station on Deception Island, one of the Shetland Islands, and then also hit the ball around a bit on his racquet in Neko Harbor to be able to say that he'd played on the continent proper.  Some of the expedition staff became interested and insisted they did not know of anyone that had ever "played" squash in Antarctica. Their only doubt was whether there might be a court in the large U.S. research base at McMurdo Sound, but it turns out that there is no squash court there -- the National Science Foundation has informed him -- so that's been settled.

Three Antarctica veterans who have wintered in many bases down there and have served on close to 100 expeditions among them to the effect that they were not aware of anyone having played squash in Antarctica.

A record or not, it is a pretty unique experience and Ramon can now proudly say he has played squash in all 7 continents.
