Jeremy Barnes Memorial Squash Fund
2024 was a great year for the Jeremy Barnes fund activities
The fund sponsored lunch for 50 college players at the SE Invitational at Charlotte squash club in November – thanks to Vanderbilt, William & Lee, Duke, UNC and University of Richmond for participating.
Synopsis by W&L Captain John Williams
Thank you again for organizing this weekend…we had a great time as always! Below is the synopsis of our weekend written by my team VP:
Washington and Lee’s squash club was honored to receive an invitation to this year’s tournament down in Charlotte. While we could not procure a full roster for the event, we enjoyed the high level of competition and had a great time meeting other players and coaches. Charlotte Squash Club is a fantastic venue for this tournament, and we look forward to hopefully returning at some point in the future. Our first match against Vanderbilt went well, and despite having to forfeit our 6-9 seeds who could not attend, we finished the match only losing to Vanderbilt 5-4. Our match against UNC ended in the same 5-4 loss, but our attending players all fought hard. Duke’s talented team proved to be a challenge, as they beat us 9-0 in the final match of the day. Overall, we had a productive tournament, and the folks at Charlotte Squash Club were gracious hosts.

Washington & Lee University ’25
The 3rd Annual high school Philadelphia day trip was enormous success. Funded by the Jeremy Barnes Memorial Fund, each year, we take a group of 20 or so students to University City by train to visit the Drexel and UPenn campuses. We played with the great Ambassador of squash Margot Prow and other members of the Drexel team and met the coaches White and Foster. We visited the Arlen Specter center, headquarters of USsquash and had lunch at Sabrina’s Cafe. We had the good fortune to meet with UPenn Alum and current #14 WR Ali Abu Elanien; it was an inspirational trip for the players with the central message being determination is the key to success. The activity is open to DMV area High School students. Much thanks to Matt Rosser and Jacqueline Barnes for their assistance to make this a very special day. In loving memory of Jeremy Barnes. To make activities like this and others available for juniors please donate to the Jeremy Barnes Memorial Fund. https://aussienicksquash.com/jeremy-memorial-fund/
The Jeremy Barnes Memorial Fund sponsored lunch for the inaugural Pickleball Tournament & Fundraiser Event Orchard Manor Foundation on Sunday, October 13, 2024! This event offers a fantastic mix of fun and friendly competition, both on and off the court, featuring a Pickleball clinic, charity tournament, raffles, and an auction—all while supporting a wonderful cause!
All proceeds will go toward supporting Orchard Manor Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, whose mission is to empower individuals with disabilities in an agricultural setting.
2024 Jeremy Barnes Memorial tournament
Congratulations to Sergio Lopez for winning the Jeremy Barnes tournament 2024 – over 50 people participated this year in an event that is quickly being recognized as one of the highlights of the national calendar especially for players 5.0 and above where players came for out of state and overseas to pay in the event. Special mention to Sana and Saif Bahadar from Pakistan who are also helping to start Deaf Squash in the US.

2023 Funds are being used for an array of squash activities
2023: AussieNick Squash is taking 25 BCC and Whitman students to Philly for squash visits with the JB fund. The group is meeting with Iman and Madeline (two AussieNick alums, now at UPenn) and doing a clinic at Drexel with their women’s #3 and former British U19 champ. Madeline has set up the first UPenn women’s club team and will share this with the students in referencing women in leadership roles. Thanks for your support!
2021 & 2022 Funds have been spent on an array of squash activities
Several DC area varsity squash teams were taken to Philadelphia for the day to meet and play with members of the Drexel Squash team, Jeremy’s former team and Dylan Kachur, Jeremy’s best friend.. They played and were coached by amazing Specter coaches at the Arlen Specter Squash Center, and met with coaches Jack Wyant (UPENN) and John White (DREXEL). Schools that participated in this event included Walt Whitman HS, Md, BCC HS Md and Wakefield School, VA. Connie plans to take 5 varsity HS teams to Philly for this trip 2022-23.
The JB Fund sponsored the SE Intercollegiate Squash tournament with is an annual event allowing Club and emerging teams to play free of charge (with food supplied) so they can achieve the minimum number of matches required for Nationals. NC State attended and also received tshirts through the fund. Captain Saurav Jain and his teammates then went on to do a terrific presentation to the school which has moved the team to Club status.
18 CitySquash students, NY urban youth program, stayed at the Barnes residence in Md in May with lunches and dinners sponsored by the JB fund.

2023 Jeremy Barnes Memorial tournament
The Jeremy Barnes memorial tournament has become a popular feature on the DC calendar. Congratulations to Jack Kagan who is the 2023 Jeremy Barnes tournament champion. A fitting champion, Jack was Jeremy’s best friend who defeated CCAC Coach Assem for the title. With great squash, camaraderie and fun the weekend produced phenomenal playing and many laughs and anecdotes about our dear boy. We had many people travel to DC for the weekend and none other than our very good friends from Chapel Hill, NC Rick and Joanne Smat Kagan Jack Kagan and Avital Romoff and Zoë Kagan and Alex. Thanks everyone for playing and we will see you next year.
